Payment methods accepted

You can pay by credit card or debit card, securely processed on our behalf via PayPal. Payments must be in GBP/pound sterling only. You don't need a PayPal account to pay using this method.

We also accept PayPal payments, again in GBP/pounds sterling only, using your existing PayPal account.

Please note that "PayPal" will appear on your statement, rather than "Abbotsford Books"

Alternatively, you can send a sterling cheque, payable to Julian A. Walker, to Abbotsford Books, 1 Sylvanus, BRACKNELL, Berkshire RG12 8ZL. Your book(s) will be sent when the cheque clears, and we'll keep in touch with you about this via email.

The pictures on the site are necessarily quite small, but if you need more or just bigger pictures of a book you're thinking of buying, email us (see the Contact Us page for how) and we'll do our best to help.

Postage and packing

Prices include second class postage to UK addresses.  If you want books sent faster, e.g. by Special Delivery Next Day, then please email us asking for this. The process will be as set out for overseas buyers, in the next paragraph.

Postage and packing prices for overseas destinations are based on a parcel weighing 1kg. Heavy books and sets will cost considerably more to send and we will calculate the extra needed, then email you, inviting you to buy additional shipping to cover the costs. It's just like buying another book. Simply go to Category "Additional Shipping" at the top of the Browse by Category list on the home page and add the appropriate item for the additional cost of postage and packing to your shopping cart.  You have two clear working days after we notify you of the additional p&p price to accept the increase. If we do not hear from you in that time, we will cancel the order and relist the book(s). Working days excludes Saturdays, Sundays and English bank and public holidays.

We sometimes reuse packaging materials, as long as they are strong and clean enough for the purpose. This allows us to keep down our costs and thus keep down our prices. It also helps keep down landfill.

Abbotsford Books aims to post books on the same or next working day after payment has cleared but occasionally this may not be possible.  The buyer will be sent an email confirming shipment.

If the goods are lost in transit, as confirmed by the carrier, Abbotsford Books will, if possible, send a replacement.  If the item is now out of stock, a full refund will be made, in both cases within thirty (30) working days of such confirmation of loss in transit. Working days excludes Saturdays, Sundays and English bank and public holidays.

We are not responsible for delays or failures beyond our control, such as delays in the mail system. This does not affect your statutory rights.

Tax and custom duties

Currently, books and magazines are zero rated in the UK for Value Added Tax (VAT). Buyers are responsible for the payment of any tax, import tax or customs duty relating to their own country. Note that a requirement to pay such taxes or duties may cause a delay in delivery as items are held at customs pending payment. As things stand at present, this will usually not apply to the US or to any country within the European Union.

Filling orders

No order is deemed as accepted until availability is confirmed. If the item is out of stock, the order will be cancelled and no payment taken.

Returns and refunds

Under the Distance Selling Regulations 2000 you may return a book which is unsatisfactory as long as you contact us within seven (7) working days or receipt.  Working days excludes Saturdays, Sundays and English bank and public holidays. If you wish to return a book, please email or write to us (details on our Contact Us page). If we have supplied a book materially different from the one you bought (wrong book, or condition not as described) we will also refund your return postage. Books must be returned in the same condition as in which they were received, and preferably in the original packaging.

We recommend the use of a trackable method when returning a book as no refund will be processed until we have received the book. If a book is lost in transit when being returned, it will be your responsibility to seek compensation from the carrier for the loss. Abbotsford Books will no longer be involved.

Refunds will be made using the same payment method used to buy the book.

The law apply to all transactions arising from the Abbotsford Books website shall be English law. The language used in all transactions will be English.
